Summary: The Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP) opens a call to hire a PhD Researcher, under the scope of the project “MIND-Matosinhos: Multiple Interventions to Prevent Cognitive Decline”, funded by the Programa Operacional de Inclusão Social e Emprego, Portugal 2020 and European Union, through the European Social Fund (POISE-03-4639-FSE-000793).
This project aims to quantify the impact of a community-based program to prevent cognitive decline (MIND-Matosinhos), comprising multiple non-pharmacological strategies, such as cognitive training, physical activity, nutritional education, diagnosis and correction of hearing loss, as well as adaptation to memory loss.

- Admission requirements:
The candidate must have:
a) PhD in Public Health and a Degree in Psychology;
b) Good track record of publication in international peer-reviewed journals;
c) Participation in epidemiological research and experience regarding collecting data in healthcare services, and handling and analysis of different types of data;
d) Fluency in English and Portuguese, written and spoken.
Initiative, critical thinking and autonomy in carrying out scientific work will be highly valued. All national, foreign or stateless persons who hold a doctorate degree, and a scientific and professional curriculum that reveals an appropriate profile for the activities above mentioned can apply to this call.
- Activity outline: The researcher will be responsible for planning, implementing and managing the project aiming to prevent cognitive decline, which will comprise multidisciplinary strategies, and also being responsible for handling and analyzing quantitative data. The researcher is expected to produce scientific papers suited for publication in peer-reviewed international journals.
- Workplace and supervision: Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto, under the supervision of the project principal investigator Vítor Tedim Cruz. Address: Rua das Taipas, n.º 135 4050-600 Porto, Portugal
- Applicable legislation: The hiring will be governed by the Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 29 August, as emended by Law no. 57/2017, of July 19, which approves the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (“RJEC”) and the Labour Code, approved by Law no. 7/2009, of 12th February, in its current wording.
- Duration: Work contract with non-fixed term according to the Labour Code, with expected stating date in October 2020. This contract cannot exceed the project’s duration.
- Monthly Salary: The monthly salary is set in accordance with the provisions in RJEC, article 15, no. 1, corresponding to level 33 of the single salary scale approved by Portaria nº 1553-C/2008, de 31 de Dezembro at 2,128.34 Euros gross. The salary is paid 14 months per year.
- Selection criteria: The selection methods are the Curriculum Vitae evaluation [CV (90%)] and an interview (10%), according to the Decree-Law n.o 57/2016, of 29 August, as amended by Law no. 57/2017, of July 19. There will be a pre-selection based on the CV evaluation, and if needed, up to three candidates will be selected for an interview based on the CV score. The successful candidate must score at least 10 points (half of the total score) in both the CV and the Interview.
8.1. Criteria for Curriculum Vitae evaluation (0 to 20 points):
a) Track record of international publications in peer-reviewed journals in terms of number and quality (0 to 5 points);
b) Participation in research activities involving multi and interdisciplinary teams of researchers (0 to 5 points);
c) Experience in the design and planning epidemiological research (0 to 4 points);
d) Experience in managing and analysis of quantitative data (0 to 4 points);
e) Proficiency in English, written and spoken (0 to 2 points).
8.2. Criteria for interview evaluation (0 to 20 points):
a) Professional knowledge and skills to accomplish the work plan (0 to 9 points);
b) Motivation towards the research project (0 to 4 points);
c) Communication skills (0 to 4 points);
d) Professional attitude (0 to 3 points).
